Friday’s Movies

In Tibet, if you are blind you are an outcast. You are a sinner because you did something evil in your past life. People call you “Blind Idiot”. They shove you around. They steal your money. They steal your clothes.  For, “Without eyes, a man is not complete.” Then a blind teacher, Miss Sabyre of Germany, decided to take action. So what did she do? She took her blind students up Mt. Everest with American Mt. Everest expert, Erik Weihenmayor who was also blind. “I’ll prove that I can do all kinds of things in life,” says one student.
I think that of all the movies, I liked Blindsight the best. I mean it was really inspiring and it really reached to the human limits. You realized how much people can do, if they set their mind to it. I mean, how often do you see 6 blind kids making their way up Mt. Everest? Not very often.
Just imagine: (you have to close your eyes for this to work – remember you’re blind) you reach out with your pole to feel the ground. You stumble across little rocks and all of a sudden you poke out your pole and there’s nothing there – you’ve come to a ditch. This means that you’ve gotta find a way to get across the ditch… and you can’t see. “The thing that always gets you is the reach… trying to find a place to hold to get across… cuz you can’t see,” says Erik.
But after a while, you forget that these people are blind. In the beginning, I felt as if that was a big part of them: they are blind people. But as the movie went on I realized that they are simply just people! And being blind does not stop them from achieving greatness! I’d definitely rate that movie 4 ½ out of 5. My only criticism is that I think they could have shown more of the perils of the climb, and how physically hard it was.  And I thought it was a little slow.
Recycled Life was also really good and also really sad. I thought that they really got the point across; it was really effective. For that one, I’d say 4 out of 5.
And then last but not least, Ayamye. I thought that Ayamye was good, but I didn’t feel like it really got the point across. It didn’t really show you the hardships, but instead told you. Important movie and idea, not the most effective layout. Therefore, I think I’d give 3 ½ out of 5.

At the End of the Day…

Between today and yesterday, I think that the biggest thing I’ve learned from all of this is that people want to get interviews with us. They want to talk to us. ‘Cause everybody’s only human. They are all really friendly to us. They would like publicity for their films and all, but not only that, they are interested in the young generation. ‘Cause in the end we’re gonna be the ones that change the world or we’re gonna be the future audiences. It’s that simple!!!
