TEMPESTS OF THE DEEP

...is an excellent nature documentary about the effects of El Nino on the Channel Islands, mainly focusing on sea lions and elephant seals. The movie was excellently made and beautifully shot. The movie was about how when El Nino happens the winds are so strong that they uproot seaweed and the water temperature changes and becomes warmer so cold-water fish swim away. When this happens the sea lions lose their food sources and cannot feed themselves and their babies. The tide also rises and many baby sea lions get trapped and then drift out to sea and drown. Tempests of the Deep made me cry twice. The film is great and I didn’t know that this happened but it’s very, very sad.

The filming was amazing. The movie is based around the Channel Islands, off the coast of Santa Barbara. There is beautiful nature and underwater footage. I loved the close up shots of beautiful underwater creatures. Some of the movie used these close up shots, other parts showed stunning landscapes of the islands.

The movie was very disturbing in some parts. It showed baby seals starving to death, being abandoned by their mothers, and drowning after being carried out to sea. It’s hard to understand why the person filming didn’t go save them, or bring them fish. Sometimes it’s hard to accept what happens in nature.

This film was very moving. Sometimes difficult to watch, but I liked it. Tempests of the Deep is an amazing movie. I would give it a three and a half out of five because I don’t enjoy watching movies that make me sad.
