LIFE 2.0

Reviewed by Gaby

Picture a place where you can build the life you have always dreamed of and be whoever you want to be, skinny, fat, tall, or short. Life 2.0 is a glimpse in to the virtual reality of "Second Life," which is a habit-forming online game in which you never win. This film follows the stories of three individuals whose lives have been greatly impacted by this virtual universe. These people's lives have been twisted and manipulated into a place of fantasy; they have lost themselves through their addiction to Second Life. They have fallen into its unforgiving rabbit hole that is going to be extremely hard to crawl out of. The film followed the story of an online love affair, a business enterprise, and a hope for a chance at a better childhood experience. All of the people in this movie had a missing piece in their life and used Second Life as a way to escape from reality. This movie showed how addictive and dangerous the internet can be, and puts up a big red flag about these websites.

One character that especially fascinated me in this film was Azri Falcone. She was a black woman that made her living in the basment of her parent's house on the computer. Although the life she created for herself on the internet was very glamorous, clean and healthy, in reality she was the opposite. Although she did make money from her Second Life, the multiple hours spent on the computer in a nasty cigarette and trash-filled room is just not healthy. Like little kids that are hooked on video games, at one point the parents have to intervene for the well-being of the child. I beleive that Azri Falcone is stuck in that addictive state most people grow out of. Not being able to keep her life in balance I am confident that the health and money problems she has been having will proceed to get worse.

Overall, I imagine the world would be a better place without the "game" of Second Life. 3/5
