On Wednesday January 7, 2009, fellow reporter Sophie and I headed down to the Hotel Santa Barbara to witness the unveiling of the poster for the 24th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Reporters from the Independent, Santa Barbara News Press, Montecito Journal and KJEE crowded around film fest head director Roger Durling, as he eagerly told of what is awaiting us at the Film Festival this year.

Because the Film Festival begins only two days after the Inauguration, the film on opening night is a political thriller directed by Rod Lurie called Nothing but the Truth. The closing night film is about two young Americans who are struggling with todays economy, but in the end come out on top. The film is called Light Bulb.

After listening to Roger, Sophie and I started walking around only to get caught by a reporter with the Santa Barbara News Press who wanted to know who we were and what the heck two teenagers where doing out of school at an event like that. We told him and our story appeared this morning in the News Press, taking up the last two paragraphs of a special section on the meeting for the Film Festival.

Moving on from our brief interview, Sophie and I began talking to Kim, a volunteer for the Film Festival as well as a reporter for KJEE, about possible places to go and possible people to see while on our adventure in Washington DC next week. We got lots of ideas and had a great time seeing her again.

Our last encounter of the day was with Roger Durling himself, where we were able to ask him a few questions about the upcoming Film Festival. He assured us that it will be incredible this year and that there are a few surprises to look forward. Good ol' Roger! Can't wait to see what his hair looks like this year!!!!
